I obviously do not like Winter. It is finally supposed to snow here in northern Colorado. So what do I do? Harken back to the Spring days in Wyoming, actually early Summer, when the fields were a phenomenal shade of green, iridescent, and the skies were a powdery light cerulean blue. That's the weather I've been missing! I'm afraid it'll be a few months more before we see that again! Oh well....something to look forward to, I suppose.

"California Bougainvillea" by Karla Nolan, framed glass painting

Ah, the lovely bougainvillea! Almost as much fun to paint as the poppy is, I especially enjoy seeing it growing, climbing, clawing it way to the top of a building. The finest bougainvillea I have seen was while in Vejer de la Frontera, Spain, one of "the most beautiful towns of Spain". This hot pink one was climbing a stark white adobe house, with a few spent petals lying on the ground. It was very memorable. But while in Sonoma, California, a year ago, I saw one much like the paintings you see above (framed, top, and close up, bottom).

"Springtime = Poppy Time" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

For some strange reason I have springtime on my mind. Now it is almost winter, you know, although the official date is still several weeks off. It's been pretty cold here in Colorado but so far we haven't had much in the way of snow. Sometimes we get raging blizzards -- I expect that will occur in February or March possibly -- but even a light dusting of the white stuff makes me want spring to get here quickly. There's an old saying, "Earth laughs in flowers", a quotation I really like. The brown earth, the leafless trees -- these just don't do it for me. Deep down inside that brown earth the plants just rest and wait -- I don't rest very much, but I do wait and look forward to warmer weather when the jagged poppy leaves emerge with their succulent poppy buds just ready to burst open at the seams (they do look like seams!) and perform the annual miracle of the opening of the poppies. They can be Oriental Poppies, European Poppies, California Poppies, I don't care what kind or color (although red is my favorite), I'm just thrilled to see them return and pick up my spirits. They are the happiest of flowers and my very favorites to paint!

"Colorful Irises" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

Irises tend to be very trying to paint, very difficult. The waviness of them, their curves, their shadows -- all a bit frustrating. And yet I enjoy attempting to capture them. Painting irises onto glass can be a little disconcerting because it is so easy to lose track of their lines -- they tend to merge together on occasion. Still, I enjoy the challenge. There is a close-up on my website.

"Poppies in Abstract" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

ALERT: You are about to view art of a different nature. These are paintings on glass -- that is, painted directly onto glass with specially formulated glass paints. They are always framed for the protection of the glass. The paints often are transparent and sometimes opaque, giving a stained glass appearance under good light. They, like all fine art, should not be hung in direct sunlight. The photographs do not do them justice -- my colors are very vibrant. Close ups are available, just e-mail me for information (see below). In most instances, click on the actual image for an even larger image to view -- you'll see lots of different items such as marbelization, transparent or opaque parts of the work -- try it and see! Commissions are accepted.

A bit blurred, sort of dreamy, these poppies were more experimental than some I have painted. They are painted directly onto the glass, naturally, and framed in simple black which I feel highlights the flowers and certainly does protect that glass! Just sort of a small sweetness of a painting....

"More Dew on Morning Glories" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

Well, spring is a long way from today, isn't it? We're supposed to get a dusting of snow, Thanksgiving is over, I've been ill but am healthier now -- so, I look forward to warmer weather when I can see the actual dew on the real morning glories, not just in my glass painting! Patience is not my biggest virtue, I guess it's obvious, plus I'm not sure a "winter" person....

This painting just glows -- I'm very proud of it -- lots of transparency and glimmer here. I recently sold a companion piece to it. There are different hues of blues and the tangling of leaves.

"Cosmic Skies" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

I painted this large framed painting on glass some time ago and wasn't happy with it but have grown fond of it -- the skies above us at night are so mysterious, I can only wonder if any of this painting is even slightly accurate! Who knows? Maybe an astronomer could corroborate the findings on my glass, but does it really matter? We're just the little specks in the vast old universe, so why not take just a bit of artistic license here? (The lower photo is of a close up of the painting.)

"Colorado Autumn Aspen" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

This painting finally finished drying — aspens are favorites here in Colorado but should really be left in their native environment — that is, up in the mountains where they spread via a complicated root system. When planted even at mile high, the trees tend to get all sorts of diseases — just take the drive, folks, up to the higher altitudes and enjoy them there! This particular painting is a real mix of both opaque and transparent glass paints — shimmering shades and already framed. It measures 12"x9" edge to edge glass, will be framed in black, retails for $325 and if you live in the U.S., I’ll throw in the s/h charges! Such a deal! "Rhode Island Sail" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

Egads, she's back to the paintings on glass! Indeed, I am! It's been a bit since I've had the opportunity to paint onto glass, but I'm happy to have returned to it. Travel, family, other considerations have taken over my glass painting activities, but now that I have yet another new blogspot and website highlighting my paintings on glass (which I hope you will view!), I'm going to try and work out a palette knife oil painting schedule that is compatible with the glass painting schedule. What can I say, wish me luck! There are definite pros and cons to my paintings on glass --they are a different type of art, not completely appreciable on a computer monitor -- best in person, naturally! However, bear with me, please, as I try very hard to produce high quality photographs of what I paint. (First photo is full painting, second, close up)

"Happy Pansies" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

Pansies are just delightful flowers. Although close to impossible to paint, at least for me, the colors are vibrant or subtle, but never dull. They spring back to life in the fall, having endured the summer heat, but are often better replaced then.

Many people think of pansies in shades of purples or blues. I have seen them in hues of oranges and yellows and whites and almost black. I feel it is incumbent upon me, being the colorist (so I'm told) to add a bit of zip that Nature seemed to remember in the bougainvillea but sort of skipped over with pansies. Call it artistic license, if you will!

"Blue Sky Day in the Rocky Mountains" by Karla Nolan, framed glass painting

This is the first day of my new art blogspot, "Painting Onto Glass" -- I was inspired to do this by an old artist friend, Daniel Edmondson, to draw attention specifically to the unusual artworks attained by this form of painting. (I also paint in oils and pastels.)

I would like to warn you, however, that the computer, unfortunately, does not do this form of painting justice. You probably won't be able to see the translucence that the paints bring to the glass or the depth and dimension in this kind of painting. However, please bear with me, as I will attempt to bring to the screen my best efforts to show these paintings as well as possible. Think a bit of stained glass and you will discover what an unusual type of two dimensional painting this is.

"Blue Sky Day in the Rocky Mountains"

The first image is the complete painting, the second is a close up. This is a 9"x32" framed painting on glass (black frame) which took quite some time to complete. The rolling hills seemed to need a bit of color and the blues of the sky are never just blue -- if you look, while driving down the street, you'll see purples, greens, and varying shades of gray and blue. That knowledge, plus a bit of artistic license, makes for a wonderful painting experience.
